A real castle on its own lake in County Clare, 98 rooms of turf fires and tall windows, with a walled garden, a whiskey snug and Shannon 40 minutes down the road.
Ballyveagh has been standing over its lake in County Clare since the 1500s and it wears its age well: thick walls, a tower, portraits of people nobody can name. It is grand without being stiff and the porter keeps a map of the lake and woodland walks at the desk.
The 98 rooms are in the castle and the old coach house, all high ceilings, big beds and views of water or garden. Downstairs there are fires in every room, a drawing room for reading and a snug with a long list of Irish whiskeys.

There is Clare beef and Atlantic fish at dinner, breakfast is a feast and the staff will sort golf, a boat on the lake or a day out to the Cliffs of Moher. Bring a coat.

Rooms
The castle rooms have the grand proportions: high ceilings, tall windows, big beds and a view of the lake or the tower. A couple have older bathrooms, in the nicest way.
The coach-house rooms are a little more modern and a little cheaper, set around the courtyard with the same grounds on the doorstep.
Eating
Dinner in the dining room is Clare beef and Atlantic fish, eaten under the portraits. Book it ahead; it is the long dinner rather than the quick one.
The snug has a long list of Irish whiskeys and a lighter menu by the fire. Breakfast is a full Irish, included on the crew rate.
Grounds & coast
A walled garden, lake and woodland walks start at the door and the staff will put a boat on the water for you.
The Cliffs of Moher, the Burren and the golf at Lahinch are all a short drive. Trad music in the village pubs most nights.
