Getting there
2 hours from Marseille airport (MRS), or take the TGV to Avignon and pick up a hire car at the station. A car is essential in the Luberon. The local roads are slow on purpose.
The food
Dinner at the house most nights, by the cook. Out, Le Carillon in Cucuron for the regulars' table, La Petite Maison for a longer evening, La Closerie in Lourmarin if you have booked weeks ahead.
Worth doing
Lourmarin market on a Friday morning, early. Roussillon for the ochre cliffs. Isle-sur-la-Sorgue for the antique fair the first weekend of the month. Long walks anywhere the lavender is in season.
The detail
Open April to October, closed in winter. 5 rooms, an outdoor pool, bicycles in the barn. The owners speak French and English; their daughter, who lives in the village, speaks Italian too.
